Design the Second Turn: Asynchronous Peer Feedback Students Can Use

Use this copy-ready three-turn activity to make asynchronous peer feedback specific, course-connected, and useful for revision.

Many asynchronous discussions are organized around countable actions: make an initial post, reply to two classmates, and move on. The instructions are easy to grade, but the replies often have nowhere to go. Even thoughtful feedback can become a dead end when the author is never asked to interpret or use it.

Design the exchange as a small feedback loop instead:

  1. A student explains one consequential choice.
  2. A peer responds to one specific part of that explanation.
  3. The original student returns and decides what to revise, defend, or keep open.

The useful unit is not the number of posts. It is the second turn that gives the author a reason to return.

A useful asynchronous discussion has a return built in: explain, respond to something specific, then decide what changes.

Why a required reply is not enough

The problem is not text, video, or the discussion board itself. It is an assignment structure that treats every contribution as an isolated deliverable.

UC Santa Cruz's guidance on asynchronous discussion prompts recommends telling students how a response should add to the conversation: by questioning, critiquing, extending, or offering a counterpoint. A direction such as “respond to two classmates” specifies quantity but leaves the intellectual job undefined.

Peer feedback also works best when it remains formative. A 2024 systematic review of peer-assessment design in higher education found the strongest support for feedback students could apply to their learning or performance. Training, opportunities to use feedback, and clear resources improved the process; peer marking was a different and less consistently useful job.

The implication is practical: do not ask peers to grade one another. Ask them to help the author make one next decision.

Copy this three-turn activity

Purpose: Help students test one decision, interpretation, or draft choice before the work is finished.

Best fit: A project walkthrough, case analysis, design choice, argument, worked example, presentation rehearsal, or draft that can still change.

Group size: Pairs or groups of three. In a larger course, assign each student one response partner instead of asking everyone to browse the full class feed.

Suggested rhythm: Initial explanation by Wednesday, peer response by Friday, author return by Sunday.

Turn 1: explain one choice

Ask for a short response rather than a summary of the whole assignment:

Show one choice in your work that still matters. Explain what you chose, why you chose it, and one question you want a peer to test. Keep the response to 90 seconds or less.

The open question matters. It gives the peer something more useful to do than invent a compliment after the fact.

Turn 2: respond to something specific

Give the peer this structure:

Point to one claim, example, or moment in the explanation. State what you understood. Then add one question, counterexample, missing consideration, or alternative that could help the author make the work stronger.

When the response is attached to a video, use a timestamp to identify the moment. A useful comment might begin:

  • “At this point, I understood your decision as…”
  • “The evidence supports your choice when…, but what happens if…?”
  • “One alternative worth comparing is… because…”
  • “I can follow the result, but I still need to understand…”

Require one focused response. More replies do not automatically produce more learning.

Turn 3: make a decision

Ask the original author to return with a short comment:

After considering the feedback, name one thing you will revise, one choice you will keep, or one question that remains. Explain why.

Students should be free to reject feedback when they can explain the decision. The return turn is evidence of judgment, not obedience.

Give the peer one intellectual job

“Give constructive feedback” is too broad for a student who is still learning the course and the practice of critique. Choose one job that matches the learning objective:

  • Test a claim: Find a condition or counterexample that could weaken it.
  • Check the evidence: Identify where evidence is convincing or where another source, result, or observation is needed.
  • Compare alternatives: Name another plausible approach and the tradeoff it creates.
  • Follow the process: Identify the step that is clear and the step that needs more explanation.
  • Read as the audience: Point to the moment where an intended reader, client, patient, or user may become uncertain.

Use only one or two jobs in a single activity. UC Santa Cruz's peer-review guidance similarly recommends limiting feedback to objective criteria connected to the assignment and learning outcomes.

Use a lightweight response rubric

Score the peer response as clear, partial, or not yet evident:

Do not grade whether the author accepts the feedback. Grade whether the peer made a course-connected contribution and whether the author considered it.

This structure is deliberately small. A systematic review of online peer feedback in higher education found that rubrics and student training were among the most common supports. Students need a model of what useful feedback looks like before they can reliably produce it.

Keep the activity inclusive and manageable

The recording should serve the learning objective, not become a performance test by accident.

  • Allow notes and reasonable retries.
  • Keep the initial response short and grade the reasoning rather than camera confidence, accent, eye contact, or editing polish.
  • Allow audio, screen sharing, or an equivalent route when a visible face is unnecessary.
  • Explain who can see the post before students record.
  • Provide captions and an appropriate transcript or equivalent access route. The W3C media-accessibility guidance recommends planning captions, transcripts, and descriptions from the start rather than treating them as a repair after publication.
  • Use pairs or trios, stagger the deadlines, and assign one response partner so students know whose work needs attention.
  • Model one weak reply and one useful reply before the first graded activity.

Asynchronous discussion does not have one settled formula. A systematic review of 35 higher-education studies found little consensus on best practices. Treat this format as a bounded teaching experiment: pilot it once, ask students what helped, and adjust the prompt or grouping before repeating it.

  3. Ask each peer to insert the current playtime when feedback refers to a specific moment.
  4. The post author is notified automatically when someone comments, so the peer does not need to @mention them. Use @mentions when replying to a commenting peer or bringing another relevant Space member into the thread.
  5. Ask the author to reply in the same comment thread with the decision they made.

What the activity can—and cannot—do

This loop can make interpretation, critique, and revision more visible. It can also give a reply an actual consequence: someone returns to consider it.

It does not guarantee substantive discussion, prove who authored an associated assignment, or prevent a student from reading an AI-generated script. The quality comes from the intellectual job, shared criteria, and return turn—not from video alone.

Try it on one unfinished piece of work

Choose an assignment students can still revise. Identify one decision worth testing, assign one peer per student, and run the three turns over several days. Keep the first attempt low stakes and review a small sample of comments to see whether the prompt produced questions students could use.
