Topic Links, Space Admins, and Video Reactions

Each Topic now has its own link and page, Space owners can make a TA an admin, camera filters are open to everyone, and you can now reply to a video with a video.

We've shipped several updates in the last few weeks. Every Topic now has its own link and page, and Space owners can make a member an admin to share moderation. In the recorder, camera filters are now open to everyone, and you can reply to a video with another video.

Send students straight to a Topic

Each Topic now has its own page and link. Students who follow the link arrive at that week's prompt and responses, not at the top of the Space.

A Topic page leads with the prompt and its posts. The Space name above it links back to the rest of the course.

To get the link, select Copy topic link under the Topic title, or choose Share from the Topic's … menu. Add it to an LMS announcement, a module page, or the week's email. The Space's privacy and membership settings still apply to anyone who opens it.

Make your TA an admin

The Space owner can now make any member an admin. Open Members on the Space page, select the … next to a person, and choose Make admin.

Owners promote a member from the Members panel. The same menu has Make member, which reverses the change.

Admins can:

  • add, edit, and delete Topics
  • approve or unpublish posts in moderated Topics
  • approve requests to join the Space

Changing roles, removing members, and editing or deleting the Space stay with the owner. Members get a notification when they're made an admin and when the role is removed. This works well for a TA, a co-instructor, or a student leader who helps run a discussion section.

Camera filters for everyone

The recorder's camera filters are now available on every plan. Students can put on a graduation cap, a wizard hat, or goggles before they record. It can make the first introduction video less awkward.

Filters follow the face while you record. Choose None to turn them off.

Filters run in the browser, on the student's device. They aren't required, and the recording otherwise works as before. See Recorder tools for the drawing tools, screen sharing, and other recorder options.

Video reactions

Students can now reply to a video with a video. A student can react to a classmate's video and record their own response while the original plays next to them. They can pause or rewind the original at any point, and choose a split view or picture-in-picture.

The original plays beside the camera, with its own controls. The finished reaction includes both sides.

Reactions show up in two places. A row of reactions appears under the original video, and each reaction is also a post in the Topic, marked Reaction.

Reactions to a post appear in a row under the video. The private one is visible only to Mei and the Space's admins.

Send feedback as a private reaction

Admins can send a reaction privately. Turn on Send privately to @username before you upload. Only that student and the Space's admins can see the reply. It isn't published to the Topic, and other students never see it.

A private reaction gives one student spoken feedback on their own video.

Reactions are off by default. Turn on Allow video reactions in a Topic's settings so members can react there. Admins can try React on any post, even before turning reactions on for a Topic. See React with a Video for the full walkthrough.

Next up: LTI 1.3

We're working on a fuller LTI 1.3 integration with roster sync and grade passback. Your class list would stay in sync with the LMS, and scores would go back to the gradebook without retyping.

The Canvas embed we released in July places a Space in Course Navigation. LTI 1.3 is the step that connects it to rosters and grades.
